After nearly two weeks of action spread across two poker rooms, 16 starting flights, and a massive field of 1,335 entries, Multi-Room Mayhem III has officially crowned a champion.
When the final card was dealt Monday afternoon, it was Port Orange’s Austin Basque standing alone atop the field, earning the championship trophy and the $50,000 first-place prize.
The $250 buy-in event generated a prize pool that far exceeded its original $250,000 guarantee and attracted players from across Florida and beyond. Beginning with eight flights at Daytona Beach Poker and eight additional flights at Orange City Poker, the tournament steadily built momentum before converging into a dramatic Day 2 and streamed final table.
Basque’s road to victory was anything but easy. He entered Day 2 as the Flight 1H chip leader after bagging 745,000 chips and navigated through a field packed with accomplished tournament regulars, former champions, and several of the series’ other flight leaders. Along the way, he survived multiple key all-ins and steadily built one of the largest stacks remaining as the field narrowed toward the final table.
The final six players returned Monday afternoon with Jose Martins holding the chip lead, but Basque quickly established himself as a major contender. By the time heads-up play began, only Basque and David Pierce remained, each seeking the largest score of the tournament.
The decisive hand came with Pierce down to approximately five big blinds. Pierce moved all in from the button holding J♠8♠ and was called by Basque with 9♣8♣.
The flop came 7♠9♠A♦, pairing Basque’s nine but giving Pierce a massive draw. With an open-ended straight flush draw and multiple overcard and flush possibilities, Pierce actually held the mathematical advantage despite trailing at the moment. The turn, however, brought the 7♥, pairing the board and dramatically shifting the odds back toward Basque, who became roughly a two-to-one favorite. When the 3♥ fell on the river, Basque’s pair of nines remained best, ending Pierce’s tournament run and securing the championship.
For Basque, the victory represents the largest documented tournament score of his career and caps off an impressive run through one of the biggest fields ever assembled at Daytona Beach and Orange City Poker.
Pierce’s runner-up finish was equally impressive. The Casselberry resident battled through all three days of competition and several difficult short-stack situations to earn $25,612 for second place.
Jose Martins, who entered the streamed final table as chip leader, ultimately finished third for $18,531 after spending much of Day 2 near the top of the leaderboard. Benton Davis continued his strong tournament performance with a fourth-place finish worth $13,435, while Jeffrey Elliott and Wasim Assaf rounded out the official final table payouts.
